Clarify your Values

Many baby boomers go through a process of clarifying their values.  By this I don't mean deciding what's right or wrong.  More to the point, this speaks about figuring what you value  more of and value less.  We can not be all things, do all things, see all things.  Instead of tring to do it all, and perhaps getting locked into a trap of business, ask yourself "what brings me happiness".  Perhaps it might be focusing on one hobby and becoming proficient and skilful at it.  It might be simply determining that your health is most important, and focusing on exercising

Use Vacation Time to Check out Locations

Hi:

Some baby boomers have a good amount of vacation time built up. If you have been at a job for twenty or more years, you might receive six or eight weeks, depending on your employer.  Teachers get the summer months off and college instructors in my part of the world teach two semesters and have one off.  Sure, they need to do admin duties and professional development, but there is still a four month block of time to play with. While teachers can not get time off during the school or college session, many other workers can grab a week or two around their vacation.

Working after Retirement - Some Statistics

Statistics Canada released some reasons why people return to work after retirement.

Twenty two percent of  these were recent retirees. Four percent were looking for jobs.

Here are some of the reasons:

Buying an MP3 or External Hard Drive

Hi:

Hi:

If you are planning to buy an MP3, consider carfully the number of gb's you buy.  One gb holds about five cd's, depending on the length of the CD, of course.

The Great Technology Divide

It seems to me that baby-boomers have a great divide when it comes to technology.  I talked to two music teachers lately, well educated.  but who do not know how to use MP3's and are not interested in learning.  What will happen as they get older?

I only know a few people now who do not have email, but they still exist, especially in the older population.

Vitamin D important if no sun

Hi:

Did you know that you should take a vitamin D supplement if you live north of the Los Angeles latitude. Apparently areas north of that simply do not get enough sun, especially in winter.

Our bodies produce Vitamin D from the sun. With the long winter days, especially in grey climates, the sun may not even appear.  Some winter climates, especially those with snow, have wonderful bright days, and even though it is freezing, it is cheerful.  The sun shines!  But, even if it is out, unless you are out in it for at lease one-half hour, you are not getting any of it.

Exercise So Important for Bones

Hi:

I can't believe how much exercise can be done on a daily basis just by using my body right.  Things such as not bending over to pick things up, but bending using legs and knees strengthens the leg muscles and bones.

Strain is good in exercising. More stress signals the body to build  bone, while less stress signals it to break down bone.  Not doing enough exercise makes bone loss worse.

Record rains finally stop!

Hi:

Well, the sun finally shone today, after weeks of non-stop rain.  We are hitting records in Vancouver we the amount of rain and number of days with it - around 23 I believe.

Unfortunately, it seems to be all people are talking about.  They are sick and tired of the continuous grey, and I certainly agree with everyone that enough is enough.  Next year I do not want to spend another winter growing moss on my back and fern tentrils down my arms.   My bones ache.

High Tech Clothing

 Hi:

Most of us have packed for vacations, but the idea of one suitcase for six months is challenging. Not wanting to be sexist, but as a woman I find it daunting. I have also heard of horror stories of the cost of extra luggage. One friend was charged $900.00 for one extra suitcase her return trip from Africa. Expensive souvenirs.

Travel with new fabrics, techno tools

Hi

Travel has certainly changed since I lugged the side of a cow around Africa. The new light nylon luggage with wheels makes moving quickly possible.

Not all places work with wheels however. Cobble-stoned streets, massive steps, dirt roads; all sorts of places require you to carry your luggage.

It's a good word, really, lugging luggage.

Packing light is easier and easier, thanks to techno, breathable fabrics that protect you from wind, can be washed and dried overnight, scrunched up and still look good.
